Narrative:

While being guided to the parking gate/pad, the right wingtip strobe was broken off when the wingtip touched a set of airstairs for that parking pad. Parking sequence was normal up to the event taking place. No stop or hold signals given by either guide persons who were in their correct position. First officer observed the wingtip as it touched the airstairs and notified me. The airstairs were not in the correct position for the type aircraft being parked, as was stated by the ramp personnel guiding the aircraft. The SF340 is not normally parked on this particular pad. The EMB145/135 normally parks on this pad which does require the portable airstairs. These last 2 facts I believe to be contributing factors, along with the guide person's complacency in not recognizing different types of equipment.

Title: SF34 CREW HIT AIRSTAIRS WHILE BEING MARSHALED IN TO THE GATE AREA.

Narrative: WHILE BEING GUIDED TO THE PARKING GATE/PAD, THE R WINGTIP STROBE WAS BROKEN OFF WHEN THE WINGTIP TOUCHED A SET OF AIRSTAIRS FOR THAT PARKING PAD. PARKING SEQUENCE WAS NORMAL UP TO THE EVENT TAKING PLACE. NO STOP OR HOLD SIGNALS GIVEN BY EITHER GUIDE PERSONS WHO WERE IN THEIR CORRECT POS. FO OBSERVED THE WINGTIP AS IT TOUCHED THE AIRSTAIRS AND NOTIFIED ME. THE AIRSTAIRS WERE NOT IN THE CORRECT POS FOR THE TYPE ACFT BEING PARKED, AS WAS STATED BY THE RAMP PERSONNEL GUIDING THE ACFT. THE SF340 IS NOT NORMALLY PARKED ON THIS PARTICULAR PAD. THE EMB145/135 NORMALLY PARKS ON THIS PAD WHICH DOES REQUIRE THE PORTABLE AIRSTAIRS. THESE LAST 2 FACTS I BELIEVE TO BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS, ALONG WITH THE GUIDE PERSON'S COMPLACENCY IN NOT RECOGNIZING DIFFERENT TYPES OF EQUIP.
