Narrative:

On taxi-out instructed by grnd to hold short of taxiway C11 monitor tower. We were then instructed to backtaxi full length runway 18L. After starting to turn into position, saw aircraft on final and heard tower instruct this aircraft to go around. We were then advised that we were instructed to taxi full length not into position. The obvious cause of the problem was a breakdown in communication. I feel if we had been given a clearance with different wording, such as 'continue taxi' this would not have occurred. Supplemental information from acn 515259: while taxiing from gate in charlotte, nc (clt) to runway 18L we were instructed by ground control to hold short of taxiway C11 and monitor tower. We switched to the tower frequency and a miscom occurred which resulted in a runway incursion. We were subsequently cleared for takeoff and the rest of flight was uneventful.

THE OBVIOUS CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS A BREAKDOWN IN COM. I FEEL IF WE HAD BEEN GIVEN A CLRNC WITH DIFFERENT WORDING, SUCH AS 'CONTINUE TAXI' THIS WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED.
