Narrative:
The flight was normal. Alternator checked ok on start up. Radios started a backgnd noise about 20-25 NM from destination airport. My portable GPS told me I had 6.5 volts so I checked circuit breakers and alternator switch. Shut down electrical gear (not master switch), got out my portable radio. Slowed down and extended gear. GPS went dead (on aircraft power) and did not get 3 green landing gear lights. Called position and intention to land. Asked if anyone on ground at destination airport. No response. (Was going to ask for confirmation of landing gear.) felt comfortable that gear was extended. I remember reading in aircraft manual that no power was required to extend gear. Made a landing and was surprised that gear was not down. After plane was jacked up, I turned on the master switch and gear came right down. I had the automatic gear extender overridden, as I had been taught to do. Had I thought the gear was not down, I would have gone through the emergency gear extension procedure in the aircraft manual, but again, I believed the gear to be down.
