Narrative:
On approach to lga, autoplt pitched down rapidly causing altitude loss. Autoplt was disconnected and altitude regained. Controller was asking 'verify you're at 2000 ft.' answer was 'yes' because by that time, all altitude loss was regained. Autoplt problem was noted in aircraft logbook for mechanic's inspection. No previous problems were encountered on this flight from autoplt.

Title: AN MD80 AUTOPLT MALFUNCTIONS AND THE CREW SUFFERS A TEMPORARY LOSS OF ACFT CTL AND AN ALT EXCURSION WHILE ON APCH TO LGA, NY.
Narrative: ON APCH TO LGA, AUTOPLT PITCHED DOWN RAPIDLY CAUSING ALT LOSS. AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED AND ALT REGAINED. CTLR WAS ASKING 'VERIFY YOU'RE AT 2000 FT.' ANSWER WAS 'YES' BECAUSE BY THAT TIME, ALL ALT LOSS WAS REGAINED. AUTOPLT PROB WAS NOTED IN ACFT LOGBOOK FOR MECH'S INSPECTION. NO PREVIOUS PROBS WERE ENCOUNTERED ON THIS FLT FROM AUTOPLT.
