Narrative:
My landing in slc, used autobrakes 2, landed runway 17 somewhere below 80 KTS and passed taxiway P. The change of aircraft control to captain took place and at same time instructions from tower were issued, 'right turn when able, hold short runway 14.' I acknowledged 'hold short runway 14.' since we were already past taxiway P and north by this time, the captain turned right at the end of runway 17 onto taxiway J (also the departure end of runway 14). He turned far enough right to somewhat align with runway 14 (as if doing a back taxi). He stopped well behind the runway 32 threshold. A light single engine land aircraft was aligning to land on runway 14. Tower sent him around. We then were directed by tower to back taxi on runway 14, hold short runway 16L, which we did. Tower was initially going to file an incursion report, but controller on duty (and other controllers) verified we were short of runway 14 on taxiway J and had no other options (when we were at end with instructions to turn right). Recommendation: do not clear aircraft to take off or land on intersecting runways until it is known no conflict can occur.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SLC RECONSIDERS RWY INCURSION FROM LNDG B767-200, BUT ISSUES A GAR TO ANOTHER LNDG ACFT UNTIL THE RWY IS VERIFIED AS CLR.
Narrative: MY LNDG IN SLC, USED AUTOBRAKES 2, LANDED RWY 17 SOMEWHERE BELOW 80 KTS AND PASSED TXWY P. THE CHANGE OF ACFT CTL TO CAPT TOOK PLACE AND AT SAME TIME INSTRUCTIONS FROM TWR WERE ISSUED, 'R TURN WHEN ABLE, HOLD SHORT RWY 14.' I ACKNOWLEDGED 'HOLD SHORT RWY 14.' SINCE WE WERE ALREADY PAST TXWY P AND N BY THIS TIME, THE CAPT TURNED R AT THE END OF RWY 17 ONTO TXWY J (ALSO THE DEP END OF RWY 14). HE TURNED FAR ENOUGH R TO SOMEWHAT ALIGN WITH RWY 14 (AS IF DOING A BACK TAXI). HE STOPPED WELL BEHIND THE RWY 32 THRESHOLD. A LIGHT SINGLE ENG LAND ACFT WAS ALIGNING TO LAND ON RWY 14. TWR SENT HIM AROUND. WE THEN WERE DIRECTED BY TWR TO BACK TAXI ON RWY 14, HOLD SHORT RWY 16L, WHICH WE DID. TWR WAS INITIALLY GOING TO FILE AN INCURSION RPT, BUT CTLR ON DUTY (AND OTHER CTLRS) VERIFIED WE WERE SHORT OF RWY 14 ON TXWY J AND HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS (WHEN WE WERE AT END WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN R). RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT CLR ACFT TO TAKE OFF OR LAND ON INTERSECTING RWYS UNTIL IT IS KNOWN NO CONFLICT CAN OCCUR.
