Narrative:
Aircraft was climbed to 10000 ft after deviating for level 4 and 5 thunderstorms in area. An automated handoff was initiated and accepted by ZTL. Other aircraft were subsequently departing and requesting immediate deviations for WX. I thought I had switched aircraft X to center, so I dropped ARTS tracking. Mins later, aircraft X requested higher, so I issued ZTL frequency. The aircraft was 10 mi into mgm airspace. I initiated a call to mgm to advise of the aircraft. I feel I had issued a previous frequency change, but in retrospect may not have. Causal factors: high complexity with all aircraft deviating. Lack of assistance in a handoff capacity. Distraction, and the thought that required frequency change had been accomplished.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BHM CTLR FORGETS TO ISSUE COM XFER TO ZTL AND ACFT ENTERS MGM AIRSPACE WITHOUT A POINTOUT.
Narrative: ACFT WAS CLBED TO 10000 FT AFTER DEVIATING FOR LEVEL 4 AND 5 TSTMS IN AREA. AN AUTOMATED HDOF WAS INITIATED AND ACCEPTED BY ZTL. OTHER ACFT WERE SUBSEQUENTLY DEPARTING AND REQUESTING IMMEDIATE DEVS FOR WX. I THOUGHT I HAD SWITCHED ACFT X TO CTR, SO I DROPPED ARTS TRACKING. MINS LATER, ACFT X REQUESTED HIGHER, SO I ISSUED ZTL FREQ. THE ACFT WAS 10 MI INTO MGM AIRSPACE. I INITIATED A CALL TO MGM TO ADVISE OF THE ACFT. I FEEL I HAD ISSUED A PREVIOUS FREQ CHANGE, BUT IN RETROSPECT MAY NOT HAVE. CAUSAL FACTORS: HIGH COMPLEXITY WITH ALL ACFT DEVIATING. LACK OF ASSISTANCE IN A HDOF CAPACITY. DISTR, AND THE THOUGHT THAT REQUIRED FREQ CHANGE HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED.
