Narrative:

Approaching lga, lowering flaps to 1 degree, the 'leading edge flaps transit' amber light remained illuminated, and overhead the 'leading edge devices' indicator showed the #4 slat amber. First officer visual inspection indicated the #4 slat skewed or warped, not matching the #5 slat by about 6 inches. Performed QRH 'asymmetrical or no leading edge devices' procedure. Declared an emergency and diverted to ewr for longer runway.
