Narrative:
I was vectoring aircraft #1 for sequencing for dca (to continue descent). Aircraft #2 was being vectored for climb (destination lga). They were separated until I climbed aircraft #2. When I saw the aircraft involved losing standard separation, I issued immediate turns to both aircraft away from each other. The 'conflict alert' did not activate until the error actually occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ZDC CTLR ISSUES CLB CLRNC TO 2 ACR'S ON VECTOR WITH ENSURING LATERAL SEPARATION.
Narrative: I WAS VECTORING ACFT #1 FOR SEQUENCING FOR DCA (TO CONTINUE DSCNT). ACFT #2 WAS BEING VECTORED FOR CLB (DEST LGA). THEY WERE SEPARATED UNTIL I CLBED ACFT #2. WHEN I SAW THE ACFT INVOLVED LOSING STANDARD SEPARATION, I ISSUED IMMEDIATE TURNS TO BOTH ACFT AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. THE 'CONFLICT ALERT' DID NOT ACTIVATE UNTIL THE ERROR ACTUALLY OCCURRED.
