Narrative:
On 7/tue/2001 WX conditions at mia were VFR with circuit breaker's west thru north moving east. Our air carrier aircraft was a md-82. Departing on runway 26L we asked for and received a 180 degree heading after departure. The takeoff roll was uneventful however, at approximately 600 ft the left engine had severe compressor stalls. EPR went to 0.0 and egt went to top of scale (800 degree celsius). An emergency was declared and clearance to land was give on any runway. The engine failure checklist initiated however the engine was found to still be producing limited thrust. The decision was made not to shut it down configure the aircraft to land and land on runway 30 as soon as possible. This was based on the possibility of the WX moving over the field. An uneventful landing was accomplished on runway 30. Ground crews verified the engine was secure and the aircraft was taxied to the gate. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine was ap and west JT8D-217C and the failure was caused by a nozzle guide vane coming loose and passing through the high and low pressure turbine. The reporter said the result was extensive damage to the turbine section.

Title: A MD-82 ON TKOF CLB AT 600 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO LEFT ENG LOSS OF POWER CAUSED BY TURBINE SECTION DAMAGE.
Narrative: ON 7/TUE/2001 WX CONDITIONS AT MIA WERE VFR WITH CB'S W THRU N MOVING E. OUR ACR ACFT WAS A MD-82. DEPARTING ON RWY 26L WE ASKED FOR AND RECEIVED A 180 DEG HEADING AFTER DEPARTURE. THE TKOF ROLL WAS UNEVENTFUL HOWEVER, AT APPROX 600 FT THE L ENG HAD SEVERE COMPRESSOR STALLS. EPR WENT TO 0.0 AND EGT WENT TO TOP OF SCALE (800 DEG CELSIUS). AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND CLRNC TO LAND WAS GIVE ON ANY RWY. THE ENG FAILURE CHKLIST INITIATED HOWEVER THE ENG WAS FOUND TO STILL BE PRODUCING LIMITED THRUST.
