Narrative:
While en route to scottsdale, had flight following all the way from california. Albuquerque ARTCC handed me off to luke. Just past sun city, luke dropped us, asking if we wanted to be handed off to phoenix. As we were close to scottsdale, and outside phoenix airspace, we opted to proceed on our own. The terminal map indicated thunderbird road as a prominent landmark and outside the deer valley airport area. We tracked inbound to scottsdale south of what we thought was thunderbird road (the most obvious road visible). I noticed my proximity to deer valley, thought I was too close and immediately corrected to the south. Upon arrival at scottsdale, told to call deer valley tower, which I did. Was properly chewed out and apologized profusely. Should have called deer valley tower and/or phoenix approach to help me through the area, as not familiar with phoenix area. Also, need to be sure landmarks on map are crosschecked with some other source to be sure properly identified.
