Narrative:

ZAU had cleared our flight direct to the last waypoint on the janesville STAR due to WX on arrival track southeast of jvl. Were descended to 10000 ft, passed to ord TRACON. Checked in. Controller stated the clear and direct path to ord was being protected for departures. He asked if we could work through the WX to the northeast, that other aircraft had done so and the ride was ok. Flts were then working east and south to the airport when WX permitted. I stated we could fly the path to the northeast. I seated the flight attendants, assisted the first officer with the best path through the buildups. Ride was good, and as we were able to alter course to one more easterly, we did so and reported it. I also gave a PIREP to TRACON of the course we had just flown. After some time, TRACON gave us 'right to 220 degrees, direct ord.' as several well defined cells with solid red returns were then blocking that course, I responded 'we can fly 135 degrees, but I can't fly 220 degrees now because of cells.' he responded 'ok, descend to 7000 ft, maintain heading, what is your altitude?' after some time, he asked a second time. I responded. Later I called we could soon go direct ord, as we were flying east past the cells north of the field. He stated 'it's too late, I don't have time for you, you're going to your alternate.' we were given a 360 degree heading, and a frequency change to another ord TRACON, who immediately provided us with vectors for runway 4R at ord. Upon landing, I called and spoke with TRACON supervisor who refused to give me the name of the controller. He stated he thought he remembered walking through the radar rom about that time and hearing something like that. I expressed my anger and dissatisfaction. The next day, I spoke with an air carrier representative who is looking into the case for me.

Title: S80 CAPT CHALLENGES C90 CTLR'S ATTITUDE ABOUT WX DIVERSIONS AND SEQUENCING.

Narrative: ZAU HAD CLRED OUR FLT DIRECT TO THE LAST WAYPOINT ON THE JANESVILLE STAR DUE TO WX ON ARR TRACK SE OF JVL. WERE DSNDED TO 10000 FT, PASSED TO ORD TRACON. CHKED IN. CTLR STATED THE CLR AND DIRECT PATH TO ORD WAS BEING PROTECTED FOR DEPS. HE ASKED IF WE COULD WORK THROUGH THE WX TO THE NE, THAT OTHER ACFT HAD DONE SO AND THE RIDE WAS OK. FLTS WERE THEN WORKING E AND S TO THE ARPT WHEN WX PERMITTED. I STATED WE COULD FLY THE PATH TO THE NE. I SEATED THE FLT ATTENDANTS, ASSISTED THE FO WITH THE BEST PATH THROUGH THE BUILDUPS. RIDE WAS GOOD, AND AS WE WERE ABLE TO ALTER COURSE TO ONE MORE EASTERLY, WE DID SO AND RPTED IT. I ALSO GAVE A PIREP TO TRACON OF THE COURSE WE HAD JUST FLOWN. AFTER SOME TIME, TRACON GAVE US 'R TO 220 DEGS, DIRECT ORD.' AS SEVERAL WELL DEFINED CELLS WITH SOLID RED RETURNS WERE THEN BLOCKING THAT COURSE, I RESPONDED 'WE CAN FLY 135 DEGS, BUT I CAN'T FLY 220 DEGS NOW BECAUSE OF CELLS.' HE RESPONDED 'OK, DSND TO 7000 FT, MAINTAIN HDG, WHAT IS YOUR ALT?' AFTER SOME TIME, HE ASKED A SECOND TIME. I RESPONDED. LATER I CALLED WE COULD SOON GO DIRECT ORD, AS WE WERE FLYING E PAST THE CELLS N OF THE FIELD. HE STATED 'IT'S TOO LATE, I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR YOU, YOU'RE GOING TO YOUR ALTERNATE.' WE WERE GIVEN A 360 DEG HDG, AND A FREQ CHANGE TO ANOTHER ORD TRACON, WHO IMMEDIATELY PROVIDED US WITH VECTORS FOR RWY 4R AT ORD. UPON LNDG, I CALLED AND SPOKE WITH TRACON SUPVR WHO REFUSED TO GIVE ME THE NAME OF THE CTLR. HE STATED HE THOUGHT HE REMEMBERED WALKING THROUGH THE RADAR ROM ABOUT THAT TIME AND HEARING SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I EXPRESSED MY ANGER AND DISSATISFACTION. THE NEXT DAY, I SPOKE WITH AN ACR REPRESENTATIVE WHO IS LOOKING INTO THE CASE FOR ME.
