Narrative:

Captain was PF. First officer was PNF and was talking on the radio. Received instructions to climb on heading 180 degrees. We thought our altitude was 8000 ft assigned. First officer read back 8000 ft on radio and 8000 ft was set in our altitude alerter. Upon leveling at 8000 ft, ATC advised we were only cleared to 7000 ft. The captain then came on the radio and stated 'we understood 8000 ft and should we descend?' ATC stated 'no, climb to 13000 ft.' no conflict with other aircraft was created. Crew duty time for the day was 13 + hours. No request from ATC to call later and further discuss.
