Narrative:
Departed key west airport, turned to a heading 360 degrees for a distance of 3.5 mi, climbed to an altitude of 3600. When reaching 2600 ft (2 mins after departure) contacted ZMA, requested flight following to naples, fl. Upon reaching 3600 ft, turned to 030 degrees using all navigation equipment including GPS. View restr area 2916 and turned to a heading of 050 degrees due to thunderstorms due north. This heading placed me north of R2916 but south of the thunderstorms. Once passing R2916 (20 NM from key west), turned direct marathon heading 090 degrees. ZMA contacted me stating radar contact 25 NM west of marathon. 10 mins later, informed me there may be a 'possibility of infringement of R2916 airspace.' corrective action: improvement of radar coverage and secondary radar system for the purpose of informing aircraft that are in close proximity of restr airspaces. At no time with the use of GPS system had I entered restr area R2916.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PIPER PA44 INSTRUCTOR PLT, WITH TRAINEE, INADVERTENTLY ENTERED A RESTR AREA DURING A VFR DEP FROM EYW WHILE USING VOR AND GPS NAVAIDS. THEY WERE ALSO DEVIATING AROUND WX.
Narrative: DEPARTED KEY WEST ARPT, TURNED TO A HDG 360 DEGS FOR A DISTANCE OF 3.5 MI, CLBED TO AN ALT OF 3600. WHEN REACHING 2600 FT (2 MINS AFTER DEP) CONTACTED ZMA, REQUESTED FLT FOLLOWING TO NAPLES, FL. UPON REACHING 3600 FT, TURNED TO 030 DEGS USING ALL NAV EQUIP INCLUDING GPS. VIEW RESTR AREA 2916 AND TURNED TO A HDG OF 050 DEGS DUE TO TSTMS DUE N. THIS HDG PLACED ME N OF R2916 BUT S OF THE TSTMS. ONCE PASSING R2916 (20 NM FROM KEY WEST), TURNED DIRECT MARATHON HDG 090 DEGS. ZMA CONTACTED ME STATING RADAR CONTACT 25 NM W OF MARATHON. 10 MINS LATER, INFORMED ME THERE MAY BE A 'POSSIBILITY OF INFRINGEMENT OF R2916 AIRSPACE.' CORRECTIVE ACTION: IMPROVEMENT OF RADAR COVERAGE AND SECONDARY RADAR SYS FOR THE PURPOSE OF INFORMING ACFT THAT ARE IN CLOSE PROX OF RESTR AIRSPACES. AT NO TIME WITH THE USE OF GPS SYS HAD I ENTERED RESTR AREA R2916.
