Narrative:

About 15 mins after passing yyt, gander center called to inform us someone in torbay reported seeing a piece of metal fall from the sky. They said the metal was flat and fell from a significant altitude. They reported we were the only aircraft it could have come from. We were cleared for a 180 degree turn back to torbay. We got a phone patch to maintenance, dispatch, and the fleet manager. After additional inputs from center and all concerned, I made the decision to return to ewr. Visual inspection of the wing and nacelles by the first officer had shown no problems. Landing at ewr was normal and no missing panels were found. This was a quick synopsis and much more was considered before a divert to ewr was decided.
