Narrative:
Landed runway 1L, cleared to R6 (control tower and FBO). Turned left from taxiway west onto taxiway W6 and was told by ground taxiway W6 was closed and that notice of closure was broadcast on ATIS. Turned around and proceeded via taxiway west and R8 to ramp. Dialed ATIS prior to landing. ATIS information was current. Could barely make out that visual approachs were in effect and the landing runways in use. The rest of the information was transmitted at a lower voice level and a faster pace. It was completely unreadable. Did not report receiving ATIS information on contact with approach or tower. Since I hadn't received it all, tried 2 more times with the same result. Intersection of west and W6 had a big sign on it pointing to ramp. W6 was clearly visible throughout its length. There were no obstructions and nothing abnormal about the taxiway. The first trip to dupage was in the morning. I dropped 3 passenger off. 5 hours later, I picked them up. The ATIS information now was garbled as before. On landing, I mentioned to ground the information was unreadable and asked status of W6. W6 was now open. Ground said there had been a number of complaints from cpr jets about ATIS reception and that repairs were scheduled for aug/mon/01. There was a blimp anchored well clear of W6 in the morning of aug/sat/01 which was gone in the afternoon. Presumably that was the reason for closure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A SMA PLT, WHILE TAXIING AFTER LNDG AT DPA, TURNED ONTO A CLOSED TXWY.
Narrative: LANDED RWY 1L, CLRED TO R6 (CTL TWR AND FBO). TURNED L FROM TXWY W ONTO TXWY W6 AND WAS TOLD BY GND TXWY W6 WAS CLOSED AND THAT NOTICE OF CLOSURE WAS BROADCAST ON ATIS. TURNED AROUND AND PROCEEDED VIA TXWY W AND R8 TO RAMP. DIALED ATIS PRIOR TO LNDG. ATIS INFO WAS CURRENT. COULD BARELY MAKE OUT THAT VISUAL APCHS WERE IN EFFECT AND THE LNDG RWYS IN USE. THE REST OF THE INFO WAS XMITTED AT A LOWER VOICE LEVEL AND A FASTER PACE. IT WAS COMPLETELY UNREADABLE. DID NOT RPT RECEIVING ATIS INFO ON CONTACT WITH APCH OR TWR. SINCE I HADN'T RECEIVED IT ALL, TRIED 2 MORE TIMES WITH THE SAME RESULT. INTXN OF W AND W6 HAD A BIG SIGN ON IT POINTING TO RAMP. W6 WAS CLRLY VISIBLE THROUGHOUT ITS LENGTH. THERE WERE NO OBSTRUCTIONS AND NOTHING ABNORMAL ABOUT THE TXWY. THE FIRST TRIP TO DUPAGE WAS IN THE MORNING. I DROPPED 3 PAX OFF. 5 HRS LATER, I PICKED THEM UP. THE ATIS INFO NOW WAS GARBLED AS BEFORE. ON LNDG, I MENTIONED TO GND THE INFO WAS UNREADABLE AND ASKED STATUS OF W6. W6 WAS NOW OPEN. GND SAID THERE HAD BEEN A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS FROM CPR JETS ABOUT ATIS RECEPTION AND THAT REPAIRS WERE SCHEDULED FOR AUG/MON/01. THERE WAS A BLIMP ANCHORED WELL CLR OF W6 IN THE MORNING OF AUG/SAT/01 WHICH WAS GONE IN THE AFTERNOON. PRESUMABLY THAT WAS THE REASON FOR CLOSURE.
