Narrative:
We were briefed by the inbound crew of some minor discrepancies including the #1 VHF navigation automatic-tune button. Being a minor discrepancy maintenance personnel deferred the automatic-tune button along with the other minor write-ups. The mechanic deferring the automatic-tune button made an error in the deferral and used the deferral number for the entire VHF navigation radio instead. There was nothing wrong with the VHF navigation radio itself and the automatic-tune button worked as well. During our preflight preparations there were several distractions including having to move the aircraft to a different gate and contracting cleaning and catering which should have already been done. With these added delays we were coming close to missing our slot time out of ZZZZ and were in a hurry to get everything done. Being that the navigation radios worked fine and the deferred automatic-tune button was even working and was a minor item anyway we did not double-check the deferral number against the deferral. The deferral number was actually that of the VHF navigation #1 radio, which on paper made it illegal for us to do class ii navigation. Because we were unaware of the error in the deferral number we safely took off and completed the flight. Upon arrival at sea we were notified that the deferral number was actually that of the VHF navigation radio and we should not have taken off from ZZZZ.
