Narrative:

On walkaround recently my first officer discovered a piece of wood (2x4) lodged between the fuselage and the horizontal stabilizer. We found out that maintenance was doing some work on the stabilizer the night before, and forgot to remove it. The maintenance guys that I talked to were very apologetic and embarrassed. The point we want to make is a suggestion that my first officer had for maintenance. Why don't they attach a long red (remove before flight) flag to the piece of wood in the future to make it more apparent while performing a walkaround.
