Narrative:

While departing runway 10 at bkw (beckley, wv) under instrument flight rules, rather than turning to heading 350 degrees and climbed to 5000 ft, I climbed to approximately 4000 ft and turned on course to the south. VFR conditions prevailed at the time and all obstacles were visible. It was discovered when ATC asked if we took off on runway 10 or runway 28L. Due to the VFR conditions at the time I did not study the approach chart close enough and discovered the non standard departure procedure. Corrective actions will include a more detailed study of all navigation information regardless of WX. Additionally, the clearance from charleston approach was 'cleared as filed 5000 ft expect 17000 ft 10 mins after,' with no mention of specific departure procedures.
