Narrative:
The copilot normally assigned to the aircraft was disabled the night before due to back pain. Another pilot was quickly scheduled for the XA30 departure at bna. The flight plan from bna was filed to mys VOR, abb VOR direct to luk and we were 'cleared as filed.' we were in the segment from abb VOR to luk with no need to tune to the cvg VOR, but were ordered to descend from 11000 ft to 9000 ft and to 'depart the VOR on a heading of 050 degrees.' we knew we were close to the VOR and, with this new route, were hurrying to locate the VOR frequency. During this haste, the aircraft was allowed to descend through the assigned altitude of 9000 ft. Cincinnati approach advised us of our altitude and we immediately corrected. The lack of good CRM with the new copilot was the contributing factor. Supplemental information from acn 522222: the MD80 was climbed to 8000 ft south bound off cvg to join the bluegrass 4 departure. Departure airspace in that area is at or below 8000 ft, arrs above 9000 ft. Arrival was working a WW24 arrival to satellite airport, luk, arriving from the southwest. The WW24 was descended to 9000 ft. I issued traffic to the MD80 for the WW24 at 12 O'clock position, 9000 ft. The mode C of the WW24 then showed 8800 ft, and I issued a 240 degree heading to the MD80, and advised him the WW24 was deviating from its assigned altitude. The WW24 continued its descent -- traffic alert was issued to the MD80. MD80 pilot reported the traffic in sight, advised they had received a 'climb' RA.

THE MODE C OF THE WW24 THEN SHOWED 8800 FT, AND I ISSUED A 240 DEG HDG TO THE MD80, AND ADVISED HIM THE WW24 WAS DEVIATING FROM ITS ASSIGNED ALT. THE WW24 CONTINUED ITS DSCNT -- TFC ALERT WAS ISSUED TO THE MD80. MD80 PLT RPTED THE TFC IN SIGHT, ADVISED THEY HAD RECEIVED A 'CLB' RA.
