Narrative:
I was arriving at dvt from the north. Controller told me to report 'canal and highway' (non-standard reporting point, apparently used by local pilots). As I crossed the canal and a highway northeast of airport, I reported my location. I was informed that I was reporting the 'wrong' point. I clarified my location and made an uneventful landing, no traffic conflicts occurred. After landing I investigated the reporting points being used. In the future when landing at airports with non-standard reporting points, I will request further information from controller. Also recommend ATC avoid the use of local reporting points.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: M205 PLT INBOUND TO DVT APPARENTLY UNFAMILIAR WITH AREA AND RPTS INCORRECT POINT REQUESTED BY ATC.
Narrative: I WAS ARRIVING AT DVT FROM THE N. CTLR TOLD ME TO RPT 'CANAL AND HWY' (NON-STANDARD RPTING POINT, APPARENTLY USED BY LOCAL PLTS). AS I CROSSED THE CANAL AND A HWY NE OF ARPT, I RPTED MY LOCATION. I WAS INFORMED THAT I WAS REPORTING THE 'WRONG' POINT. I CLARIFIED MY LOCATION AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG, NO TFC CONFLICTS OCCURRED. AFTER LNDG I INVESTIGATED THE RPTING POINTS BEING USED. IN THE FUTURE WHEN LNDG AT ARPTS WITH NON-STANDARD RPTING POINTS, I WILL REQUEST FURTHER INFO FROM CTLR. ALSO RECOMMEND ATC AVOID THE USE OF LOCAL RPTING POINTS.
