Narrative:
After landing runway 9R, we taxied on taxiway M5 to taxiway D to taxiway B. We called ramp control approaching concourse and was cleared in via position X to gate. As we were starting to turn at pox X (right turn), my first officer alerted me about a potential conflict with an aircraft on taxiway a, approaching at our 5 O'clock position, at a high speed. My first officer said 'stop,' and I applied maximum braking. An air carrier Y B727 was approaching fast. After we had stopped, ground control told us to give way to air carrier Y. This was a moot point because they continued anyway. I believe air carrier Y was given the same clearance as us -- to taxi taxiway M5 to taxiway D to taxiway B and they taxied taxiway M5 to taxiway D to taxiway a. Ground control failed to take timely intervention and a failure to actively monitor traffic. Plus, air carrier Y B727 failed to follow taxi instructions and also taxiing too fast. Air carrier Y B727 failed to monitor aircraft and take action for a potential conflict.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-800 PIC APPLIES MAX BRAKING TO AVOID BEING HIT BY AN OVERTAKING, XING B727 WHO WAS ON THE WRONG TXWY AT ORD, IL.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG RWY 9R, WE TAXIED ON TXWY M5 TO TXWY D TO TXWY B. WE CALLED RAMP CTL APCHING CONCOURSE AND WAS CLRED IN VIA POS X TO GATE. AS WE WERE STARTING TO TURN AT POX X (R TURN), MY FO ALERTED ME ABOUT A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH AN ACFT ON TXWY A, APCHING AT OUR 5 O'CLOCK POS, AT A HIGH SPD. MY FO SAID 'STOP,' AND I APPLIED MAX BRAKING. AN ACR Y B727 WAS APCHING FAST. AFTER WE HAD STOPPED, GND CTL TOLD US TO GIVE WAY TO ACR Y. THIS WAS A MOOT POINT BECAUSE THEY CONTINUED ANYWAY. I BELIEVE ACR Y WAS GIVEN THE SAME CLRNC AS US -- TO TAXI TXWY M5 TO TXWY D TO TXWY B AND THEY TAXIED TXWY M5 TO TXWY D TO TXWY A. GND CTL FAILED TO TAKE TIMELY INTERVENTION AND A FAILURE TO ACTIVELY MONITOR TFC. PLUS, ACR Y B727 FAILED TO FOLLOW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND ALSO TAXIING TOO FAST. ACR Y B727 FAILED TO MONITOR ACFT AND TAKE ACTION FOR A POTENTIAL CONFLICT.
