Narrative:
I was conducting a training flight at about XA45 am local, at the airport. Someone came on the unicom frequency and advised us that 'the airport is closed and you need to land immediately at the nearest airport.' we decided to proceed to our home base of YYY, about 25NM southeast of XXX. We arrived in the traffic pattern at YYY about 10 mins later and on approach to land, we were advised by YYY unicom that 'the FAA has ordered all aircraft out of the sky, and you need to land immediately.' we acknowledged and completed a full stop landing. I feel that the person on the radio at XXX should have identified himself as unicom, and that it was an FAA order to land immediately. We proceeded to YYY because we did not know who we were talking to, and they did not say anything about the FAA shutting down the NAS. Everything was shut down due to the world trade center destruction. I was not made aware of any NOTAMS before my departure, as I believe all the NOTAMS were issued after we departed YYY that morning at about XA00 am local.
