Narrative:
4 days, good cockpit communication/coordination within cockpit SOP with first officer xxxxxx. Flight XXX ewr-lax normal. Takeoff some WX. Shortly after, climbing FL240, a sudden surge/jolt felt throughout the cabin followed by ECAM of engine #1 egt exceedance. We both realized the stalling characteristics of engine. Leveled off at FL244 and performed appropriate checklists. Excellent division of workload since first officer was aware of checklists and ECAM properties. ATC was informed of our intention for iad diversion. They were very cooperative in regards to less communication and definitive statement with sufficient time for us to respond. Cabin advisory was given to #1 flight attendant. She kept us informed of 'how goz-it' in the cabin. Very helpful set of flight attendants, a real good crowd to work with. Since the initial bang had feared many passenger, we left channel X on and encouraged folks to listen on. Also gave them an honest description of the nature of irregularity and the amount of training we take for such things. My sincere thanks to the crew for job well done, and also not the last, but [not least] all the folks at A320 training fleet. Supplemental information from acn 425784: on climb out from ewr through FL240, #1 engine compressor stalled. Egt limits exceeded. Emergency declared and aircraft landed at iad without incident.
