Narrative:
We taxied out to runway 20C and were holding short behind another aircraft. Once he was cleared for takeoff, we moved up to hold short line and held short. We held short at least 4 min before a female tower controller issued the following clearance 'runway 20C taxi into position and hold, traffic on a 2 mi final.' as soon as she said that, the captain released brakes and started moving onto the runway. I told the captain that there was a little guy on short final. As we were about to align ourselves with runway 20C, tower said that she never cleared us onto hold. I said, 'yes ma'am, I even read back position and hold and you didn't say anything back.' take note: I read back what I heard and the captain pushed the attendant call button at the same time indicating that we both understood the 'taxi into position and hold' call.

Title: CONFUSION BETWEEN A B737 CREW AND A BNA LCL CTLR AS TO WHETHER A CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD WAS ISSUED.
Narrative: WE TAXIED OUT TO RWY 20C AND WERE HOLDING SHORT BEHIND ANOTHER ACFT. ONCE HE WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, WE MOVED UP TO HOLD SHORT LINE AND HELD SHORT. WE HELD SHORT AT LEAST 4 MIN BEFORE A FEMALE TWR CTLR ISSUED THE FOLLOWING CLRNC 'RWY 20C TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD, TFC ON A 2 MI FINAL.' AS SOON AS SHE SAID THAT, THE CAPT RELEASED BRAKES AND STARTED MOVING ONTO THE RWY. I TOLD THE CAPT THAT THERE WAS A LITTLE GUY ON SHORT FINAL. AS WE WERE ABOUT TO ALIGN OURSELVES WITH RWY 20C, TWR SAID THAT SHE NEVER CLRED US ONTO HOLD. I SAID, 'YES MA'AM, I EVEN READ BACK POS AND HOLD AND YOU DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING BACK.' TAKE NOTE: I READ BACK WHAT I HEARD AND THE CAPT PUSHED THE ATTENDANT CALL BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME INDICATING THAT WE BOTH UNDERSTOOD THE 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD' CALL.
