Narrative:

I called flight attendant #1 on interphone handset so that both I and the first officer would be able to use the lavatory and meet the new requirements to always have 2 people in the flight deck. I turned off my speaker, so that I could hear the flight attendant #1 on the handset. I then got out of my seat to let in the flight attendant #1, discuss my re-entry signal, then I left the flight deck. Upon my return I got into my seat and the first officer got out of her seat to use the lavatory. Yes, I forgot to ever turn my speaker volume back to its normal level -- and in my absence, the first officer had turned off her speaker audio to use her headset. That was it. We were no communication for about 3-4 mins. Needless to say ZNY wasn't very happy. With new procedures, come new challenges. Now I know one more thing to watch very carefully.
