Narrative:

Departed cyo approximately XA00 hours in rental C172. Check fuel visually both tanks appeared full. Flew to 4SI, ETA 1 hour 20 min. Departed 4SI approximately XD00 hours, intended destination cyo. Checked fuel visually, no dipstick in aircraft. Appeared 1/2 full aprox. Lost power approximately XE45. Contacted cascade approach, diverted towards eugene. Decided I wasn't going to make it and landed in field on crossroad. Owner added 10 gals fuel (both tanks empty) and flew the aircraft out. Upon landing there were 3.0 hours on the hobbs meter since departing cyo. Don't know how 40 gals of fuel were used in 3.0 hours. Aircraft was leaned during cruise.
