Narrative:
Aircraft was returned to service in the late afternoon of oct/fri/01. In preflight noticed maintenance did not change the status sheet. I asked the man in charge. He said it was within the 10 percent overflt and that he would update it the following monday. On sat, we had a flight request and both my copilot and I neglected to notice that the autoplt (which was written up sept/sun/01) write up was still not signed off as cleared by maintenance. There was no restriction of the flight since I had a copilot we were in every other way legal to accept this flight. After the flight I spoke to the mechanic in charge who apparently was 'unaware of the write up since he had just taken this position in the company, lost in the cracks.' I believe that maintenance was negligent but more importantly it is the captain who should have caught that the autoplt writeup was open. I accepted responsibility and should be more vigilant.

Title: CAPT OF AN AIR TAXI TWIN TURBO PROP FLT INADVERTENTLY OPERATED THE ACFT WITH AN OPEN MAINT ITEM ON THE AUTOPLT. HE DID HAVE A CO PLT TO BE LEGAL FOR IFR, BUT FLEW WITH AN OPEN MAINT WRITE UP.
Narrative: ACFT WAS RETURNED TO SVC IN THE LATE AFTERNOON OF OCT/FRI/01. IN PREFLT NOTICED MAINT DID NOT CHANGE THE STATUS SHEET. I ASKED THE MAN IN CHARGE. HE SAID IT WAS WITHIN THE 10 PERCENT OVERFLT AND THAT HE WOULD UPDATE IT THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. ON SAT, WE HAD A FLT REQUEST AND BOTH MY COPLT AND I NEGLECTED TO NOTICE THAT THE AUTOPLT (WHICH WAS WRITTEN UP SEPT/SUN/01) WRITE UP WAS STILL NOT SIGNED OFF AS CLRED BY MAINT. THERE WAS NO RESTRICTION OF THE FLT SINCE I HAD A COPLT WE WERE IN EVERY OTHER WAY LEGAL TO ACCEPT THIS FLT. AFTER THE FLT I SPOKE TO THE MECH IN CHARGE WHO APPARENTLY WAS 'UNAWARE OF THE WRITE UP SINCE HE HAD JUST TAKEN THIS POS IN THE COMPANY, LOST IN THE CRACKS.' I BELIEVE THAT MAINT WAS NEGLIGENT BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT IS THE CAPT WHO SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THAT THE AUTOPLT WRITEUP WAS OPEN. I ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY AND SHOULD BE MORE VIGILANT.
