Narrative:
Upon the landing rollout, the aircraft was slowed and then turned onto the perpendicular runway to exit. As we turned off, I heard the tower controller tell another aircraft to execute a go around. Then the controller said that in the future we need clearance to turn onto the perpendicular runway. At this point I had realized the mistake I had made by turning the aircraft out on active runway. I believe that, because I had done this many times at this airport before, I simply turned out of habit. I do believe, however, that if my turning onto that runway caused the other aircraft to go around, then he was probably too close to begin with. Also, I feel that it would have been helpful if the controller had advised us of the crossing traffic and to either expedite through the intersection or 'keep it rolling' as many controllers do. I think in the future I could follow procedures more closely as well as be more observant of other traffic in the airport operating area. From the ATC standpoint, I believe that better communications of potential conflicts may be helpful.

Title: ROLLING OUT ON RWY 1 AT ALB, AN ATR42 CREW MADE A TURNOFF ON A XING RWY THAT WAS ACTIVE.
Narrative: UPON THE LNDG ROLLOUT, THE ACFT WAS SLOWED AND THEN TURNED ONTO THE PERPENDICULAR RWY TO EXIT. AS WE TURNED OFF, I HEARD THE TWR CTLR TELL ANOTHER ACFT TO EXECUTE A GAR. THEN THE CTLR SAID THAT IN THE FUTURE WE NEED CLRNC TO TURN ONTO THE PERPENDICULAR RWY. AT THIS POINT I HAD REALIZED THE MISTAKE I HAD MADE BY TURNING THE ACFT OUT ON ACTIVE RWY. I BELIEVE THAT, BECAUSE I HAD DONE THIS MANY TIMES AT THIS ARPT BEFORE, I SIMPLY TURNED OUT OF HABIT. I DO BELIEVE, HOWEVER, THAT IF MY TURNING ONTO THAT RWY CAUSED THE OTHER ACFT TO GO AROUND, THEN HE WAS PROBABLY TOO CLOSE TO BEGIN WITH. ALSO, I FEEL THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF THE CTLR HAD ADVISED US OF THE XING TFC AND TO EITHER EXPEDITE THROUGH THE INTXN OR 'KEEP IT ROLLING' AS MANY CTLRS DO. I THINK IN THE FUTURE I COULD FOLLOW PROCS MORE CLOSELY AS WELL AS BE MORE OBSERVANT OF OTHER TFC IN THE ARPT OPERATING AREA. FROM THE ATC STANDPOINT, I BELIEVE THAT BETTER COMS OF POTENTIAL CONFLICTS MAY BE HELPFUL.
