Narrative:
Installed -300 altimeter in -200 aircraft. Received gate call, captain's altimeter sticking on aircraft XXX. Proceeded to line stores area to pick up captain's (electric) altimeter. Couldn't find one on a shelf. Saw one on the -300 shelf and grabbed it, took it to the mechanics on the gate. The altimeter was installed and operations checked ok. 1-2 hours later, the stick clerk brought me the altimeter that was removed from the aircraft, explaining that the computer wouldn't accept its removal. And that we had installed the incorrect altimeter on aircraft XXX. The stock clerk also showed me the box that the -200 altimeter was normally stocked in, that I had missed earlier in my rush to get the part to the gate.
