Narrative:
The day began with an uneventful IFR flight from ZZZ to ZZZ1 while on the ground at ZZZ1 obtained a briefing from FSS concerning WX and NOTAMS that include a discussion of temporary flight restr areas in the vicinity of ZZZ2. It was my understanding that a tfr was located west of ZZZ2 an uneventful VFR flight was conducted from ZZZ1 to ZZZ2. After departure ZZZ and clearing the traffic pattern, I turned to a heading of 170 degrees, called ZZZ1, informed them of my position and heading, and requested IFR clearance to ZZZ. ZZZ1 issued a transponder code. Established radar contact, and cleared me to fly heading 090 degrees. A short time later ZZZ1 informed me that restr airspace had been penetrated. The remainder of the trip to ZZZ was uneventful. Two FSS briefings were obtained on the day of the event, and current charts were on board the aircraft. It was my understanding at that time the tfr was located west of ZZZ2 and therefore a heading of sse would be clear of restr airspace. Tfr's are not depicted on charts, and power plants are not distinguishable from other towers on charts. To avoid inadvertent penetration of tfr's they must be more clearly identifiable. Listening to an FSS briefer read multiple tfr locations relative to towns unfamiliar to pilots from distant locations does not paint a clear picture.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C421 PLT VIOLATED A TFR INVOLVING A PWR PLANT.
Narrative: THE DAY BEGAN WITH AN UNEVENTFUL IFR FLT FROM ZZZ TO ZZZ1 WHILE ON THE GND AT ZZZ1 OBTAINED A BRIEFING FROM FSS CONCERNING WX AND NOTAMS THAT INCLUDE A DISCUSSION OF TEMPORARY FLT RESTR AREAS IN THE VICINITY OF ZZZ2. IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT A TFR WAS LOCATED W OF ZZZ2 AN UNEVENTFUL VFR FLT WAS CONDUCTED FROM ZZZ1 TO ZZZ2. AFTER DEP ZZZ AND CLRING THE TFC PATTERN, I TURNED TO A HEADING OF 170 DEGS, CALLED ZZZ1, INFORMED THEM OF MY POSITION AND HEADING, AND REQUESTED IFR CLRNC TO ZZZ. ZZZ1 ISSUED A TRANSPONDER CODE. ESTABLISHED RADAR CONTACT, AND CLRED ME TO FLY HEADING 090 DEGS. A SHORT TIME LATER ZZZ1 INFORMED ME THAT RESTR AIRSPACE HAD BEEN PENETRATED. THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP TO ZZZ WAS UNEVENTFUL. TWO FSS BRIEFINGS WERE OBTAINED ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT, AND CURRENT CHARTS WERE ON BOARD THE ACFT. IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING AT THAT TIME THE TFR WAS LOCATED W OF ZZZ2 AND THEREFORE A HEADING OF SSE WOULD BE CLR OF RESTR AIRSPACE. TFR'S ARE NOT DEPICTED ON CHARTS, AND PWR PLANTS ARE NOT DISTINGUISHABLE FROM OTHER TWRS ON CHARTS. TO AVOID INADVERTENT PENETRATION OF TFR'S THEY MUST BE MORE CLEARLY IDENTIFIABLE. LISTENING TO AN FSS BRIEFER READ MULTIPLE TFR LOCATIONS RELATIVE TO TOWNS UNFAMILIAR TO PLTS FROM DISTANT LOCATIONS DOES NOT PAINT A CLR PICTURE.
