Narrative:

On nov/sun/01, at approximately XA30 pm there was an incident that I want to report. I had flown into orl a few mins before to pick up my son to bring him home. I called executive ground to get clearance to take off again giving them the ATIS code and my intended direction of flight to ocala as a waypoint to return to gainsville. Ground gave me permission to taxi to runway 13. Once there, I was given permission to take off from the tower. I took off squawking 1200 flying runway heading. Soon after takeoff the tower asked me my intended direction of flight and I responded that I was going to ocala and confirmed that my direction would be northwest. The tower controller agreed but never told me to make my turn so I did not do so as I did not know whether I should turn right or left as there were numerous planes in the vicinity. Less than 1 min later, tower called again asking the same question as well as my location. I told him that I was flying straight from the runway approximately 1 mi from the airport and told him again that my intended direction of flight was to fly to ocala, but again was never told to make my turn. I continued following runway heading but leveled off at 1100 ft. Soon after, a large jet, landing at mco flew overhead within my estimate of 500 ft above me. At that point, tower called again asking for the plane flying southeast of the airport to identify itself. I immediately did so and was told to descend to 1000 ft and change my heading to 090 degrees. I immediately complied. Tower then asked me to call. Tower then instructed me to turn to 360 degrees which I did. At that time, I believe I asked if I should contact departure and was told to remain on his frequency and continue at 1000 ft. I continued to fly north without any further communication until I came close to sanford airport at which time I called tower again to request permission to contact orlando departure so that I could increase my altitude and get flight following back home. At that time tower instructed me to contact departure on 121.1 which I immediately did and requested a squawk code and permission to fly higher. In that contact another individual asked that I call him. Permission was granted to ascend to 2500 ft and the controller gave me a heading. Soon after I was given permission to fly to 3500 ft and told to fly to ocala. Upon my return to gainesville, I immediately called orl tower. He told me that he had reviewed the tape of our conversation and asked if I heard him ask me my intended direction of flight on 2 separate occasions, and I responded that I had but I was waiting for his instruction to make my turn. He then told me that he had assumed I would make my turn when he asked for my intended direction but unfortunately, my experience was to never do anything in class B airspace without being told to do so. I also did not know which direction I should turn as the intended course was 180 degrees from my direction of flight. There is no question that as I review this incident in my mind that I entered class B airspace without permission from orlando departure. My experience had been that tower tells me to make my turn and immediately tells me to contact departure. This unfortunately did not happen in this case. It was also my experience that in controled airspace, ground control gives me a squawk code and frequency prior to takeoff. I have reviewed this incident with a number of other pilot friends as well as my instructor. My conclusion is that I am wrong for entering class B airspace without permission.

Narrative: ON NOV/SUN/01, AT APPROX XA30 PM THERE WAS AN INCIDENT THAT I WANT TO RPT. I HAD FLOWN INTO ORL A FEW MINS BEFORE TO PICK UP MY SON TO BRING HIM HOME. I CALLED EXECUTIVE GND TO GET CLRNC TO TAKE OFF AGAIN GIVING THEM THE ATIS CODE AND MY INTENDED DIRECTION OF FLT TO OCALA AS A WAYPOINT TO RETURN TO GAINSVILLE. GND GAVE ME PERMISSION TO TAXI TO RWY 13. ONCE THERE, I WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO TAKE OFF FROM THE TWR. I TOOK OFF SQUAWKING 1200 FLYING RWY HEADING. SOON AFTER TKOF THE TWR ASKED ME MY INTENDED DIRECTION OF FLT AND I RESPONDED THAT I WAS GOING TO OCALA AND CONFIRMED THAT MY DIRECTION WOULD BE NW. THE TWR CTLR AGREED BUT NEVER TOLD ME TO MAKE MY TURN SO I DID NOT DO SO AS I DID NOT KNOW WHETHER I SHOULD TURN R OR L AS THERE WERE NUMEROUS PLANES IN THE VICINITY. LESS THAN 1 MIN LATER, TWR CALLED AGAIN ASKING THE SAME QUESTION AS WELL AS MY LOCATION. I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS FLYING STRAIGHT FROM THE RWY APPROX 1 MI FROM THE ARPT AND TOLD HIM AGAIN THAT MY INTENDED DIRECTION OF FLT WAS TO FLY TO OCALA, BUT AGAIN WAS NEVER TOLD TO MAKE MY TURN. I CONTINUED FOLLOWING RWY HEADING BUT LEVELED OFF AT 1100 FT. SOON AFTER, A LARGE JET, LNDG AT MCO FLEW OVERHEAD WITHIN MY ESTIMATE OF 500 FT ABOVE ME. AT THAT POINT, TWR CALLED AGAIN ASKING FOR THE PLANE FLYING SE OF THE ARPT TO IDENT ITSELF. I IMMEDIATELY DID SO AND WAS TOLD TO DSND TO 1000 FT AND CHANGE MY HEADING TO 090 DEGS. I IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED. TWR THEN ASKED ME TO CALL. TWR THEN INSTRUCTED ME TO TURN TO 360 DEGS WHICH I DID. AT THAT TIME, I BELIEVE I ASKED IF I SHOULD CONTACT DEP AND WAS TOLD TO REMAIN ON HIS FREQ AND CONTINUE AT 1000 FT. I CONTINUED TO FLY N WITHOUT ANY FURTHER COM UNTIL I CAME CLOSE TO SANFORD ARPT AT WHICH TIME I CALLED TWR AGAIN TO REQUEST PERMISSION TO CONTACT ORLANDO DEP SO THAT I COULD INCREASE MY ALT AND GET FLT FOLLOWING BACK HOME. AT THAT TIME TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO CONTACT DEP ON 121.1 WHICH I IMMEDIATELY DID AND REQUESTED A SQUAWK CODE AND PERMISSION TO FLY HIGHER. IN THAT CONTACT ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL ASKED THAT I CALL HIM. PERMISSION WAS GRANTED TO ASCEND TO 2500 FT AND THE CTLR GAVE ME A HEADING. SOON AFTER I WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO FLY TO 3500 FT AND TOLD TO FLY TO OCALA. UPON MY RETURN TO GAINESVILLE, I IMMEDIATELY CALLED ORL TWR. HE TOLD ME THAT HE HAD REVIEWED THE TAPE OF OUR CONVERSATION AND ASKED IF I HEARD HIM ASK ME MY INTENDED DIRECTION OF FLT ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, AND I RESPONDED THAT I HAD BUT I WAS WAITING FOR HIS INSTRUCTION TO MAKE MY TURN. I ALSO DID NOT KNOW WHICH DIRECTION I SHOULD TURN AS THE INTENDED COURSE WAS 180 DEGS FROM MY DIRECTION OF FLT. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT AS I REVIEW THIS INCIDENT IN MY MIND THAT I ENTERED CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ORLANDO DEP. MY EXPERIENCE HAD BEEN THAT TWR TELLS ME TO MAKE MY TURN AND IMMEDIATELY TELLS ME TO CONTACT DEP. THIS UNFORTUNATELY DID NOT HAPPEN IN THIS CASE. IT WAS ALSO MY EXPERIENCE THAT IN CTLED AIRSPACE, GND CTL GIVES ME A SQUAWK CODE AND FREQ PRIOR TO TKOF. I HAVE REVIEWED THIS INCIDENT WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER PLT FRIENDS AS WELL AS MY INSTRUCTOR. MY CONCLUSION IS THAT I AM WRONG FOR ENTERING CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT PERMISSION.
