Narrative:

Elp 10-9 chart will help in understanding the following narrative. After pushback from gate xa and disconnect from ground crew, aircraft was facing south. Departure runway was runway 8R. Ground control instructed a left turn on the ramp and proceed east on the ramp to turn left on taxiway J and hold short of runway 8R. We were also instructed to taxi between an airline B737 pushing from gate xb and an inbound airline MD80 holding on the ramp between taxiway J and taxiway F. While negotiating this tight but adequate avenue, we were then told to taxi behind the MD80 onto taxiway J. As we were doing this I didn't notice the hold short line until I had already taxied past it. Ground control queried us as to our intentions and informed us we were on the runway (overrun). They asked if we were ready for takeoff. We replied that we were not and asked to taxi clear. We taxied clear of the runway via taxiway K. Taxi checks and cabin preparations were then completed without incident. Takeoff clearance was received and we departed el paso on runway 8R. Confusion arose over the congested ramp as well as numerous txwys which converge on the overrun area of runway 8R/26L west end. This overrun area looks like a taxiway (black top) with yellow taxi lines painted all over it. Crews should be extra vigilant here when there is an east runway operation.

Title: THE TXWY STOPWAY RAMP AREA WHERE RWY 8R AND RWY 4 CONVERGE AT EL PASO, TX, REQUIRES EXTRA VIGILANCE AS RPTED BY AN ACR PLT WHO FOUND HIMSELF ACROSS THE HOLD LINE WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: ELP 10-9 CHART WILL HELP IN UNDERSTANDING THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE. AFTER PUSHBACK FROM GATE XA AND DISCONNECT FROM GND CREW, ACFT WAS FACING S. DEP RWY WAS RWY 8R. GND CTL INSTRUCTED A L TURN ON THE RAMP AND PROCEED E ON THE RAMP TO TURN L ON TXWY J AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8R. WE WERE ALSO INSTRUCTED TO TAXI BTWN AN AIRLINE B737 PUSHING FROM GATE XB AND AN INBOUND AIRLINE MD80 HOLDING ON THE RAMP BTWN TXWY J AND TXWY F. WHILE NEGOTIATING THIS TIGHT BUT ADEQUATE AVENUE, WE WERE THEN TOLD TO TAXI BEHIND THE MD80 ONTO TXWY J. AS WE WERE DOING THIS I DIDN'T NOTICE THE HOLD SHORT LINE UNTIL I HAD ALREADY TAXIED PAST IT. GND CTL QUERIED US AS TO OUR INTENTIONS AND INFORMED US WE WERE ON THE RWY (OVERRUN). THEY ASKED IF WE WERE READY FOR TKOF. WE REPLIED THAT WE WERE NOT AND ASKED TO TAXI CLR. WE TAXIED CLR OF THE RWY VIA TXWY K. TAXI CHKS AND CABIN PREPARATIONS WERE THEN COMPLETED WITHOUT INCIDENT. TKOF CLRNC WAS RECEIVED AND WE DEPARTED EL PASO ON RWY 8R. CONFUSION AROSE OVER THE CONGESTED RAMP AS WELL AS NUMEROUS TXWYS WHICH CONVERGE ON THE OVERRUN AREA OF RWY 8R/26L W END. THIS OVERRUN AREA LOOKS LIKE A TXWY (BLACK TOP) WITH YELLOW TAXI LINES PAINTED ALL OVER IT. CREWS SHOULD BE EXTRA VIGILANT HERE WHEN THERE IS AN E RWY OP.
