Narrative:
On approach into ewr at approximately XA40Z the approach in use was ILS runway 4R. Since it was very early in the morning the controller asked if we would like to do a visual approach to either runway 22L or runway 22R. Believing that we were the only aircraft arriving, we asked for the visual to runway 22L. When we were on an approximately 2 mi final for runway 22L another aircraft reported to be on a 7 mi final for runway 4R. As we landed at approximately XA55Z we exited on high speed taxiway 'north' and the other aircraft, a DC8 flown by air carrier Y was on very short final (less than 500 ft by the time we cleared the hold short line). If we had to go around, we didn't have anywhere to go. The controller should not have issued an approach clearance for two opposing aircraft without a lot more spacing.

Title: A B777-200 AND A DC8 ON RWY 4R-RWY 22L WERE LNDG NOSE TO NOSE, AT EWR. PLT QUESTIONED EXISTING SPACING.
Narrative: ON APCH INTO EWR AT APPROX XA40Z THE APCH IN USE WAS ILS RWY 4R. SINCE IT WAS VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING THE CTLR ASKED IF WE WOULD LIKE TO DO A VISUAL APCH TO EITHER RWY 22L OR RWY 22R. BELIEVING THAT WE WERE THE ONLY ACFT ARRIVING, WE ASKED FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 22L. WHEN WE WERE ON AN APPROX 2 MI FINAL FOR RWY 22L ANOTHER ACFT RPTED TO BE ON A 7 MI FINAL FOR RWY 4R. AS WE LANDED AT APPROX XA55Z WE EXITED ON HIGH SPEED TXWY 'N' AND THE OTHER ACFT, A DC8 FLOWN BY ACR Y WAS ON VERY SHORT FINAL (LESS THAN 500 FT BY THE TIME WE CLRED THE HOLD SHORT LINE). IF WE HAD TO GAR, WE DIDN'T HAVE ANYWHERE TO GO. THE CTLR SHOULD NOT HAVE ISSUED AN APCH CLRNC FOR TWO OPPOSING ACFT WITHOUT A LOT MORE SPACING.
