Narrative:
Helsinki ATIS information reported. Runway 33, ba .79/.83/.79, runway wet, wind 320 degrees, 29 KTS gusting 47 KTS, 0/-8. 50 KM, -rasn, 30 sct, altitude 989, PIREP, moderate-severe turbulence sfc-40, reported at XB55, moderate icing 30-5, reported at XA35, nosig. Clearance was SID runen 3M/UN872 fpr. We performed a suspected windshear, delayed rotation takeoff in accordance with operator aom procedures. Encountered severe turbulence between 3000 ft and 4000 ft MSL resulting in exceeding the 4000 ft SID leveloff altitude by 300-400 ft. 30-40 KTS airspeed deviations were observed during turbulence encounter. Captain was hand-flying and returned aircraft to assigned altitude when positive control was again possible. Estimate maximum deviation of 400 ft for 15-20 seconds. This was my first encounter with severe turbulence. Operation of FMC/FMS was essentially impossible during event as was positive control of aircraft to ATC tolerances.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 CREW ENCOUNTERED ANTICIPATED SEVERE TURB AND WINDSHEAR AFTER TKOF AT A FOREIGN ARPT.
Narrative: HELSINKI ATIS INFO RPTED. RWY 33, BA .79/.83/.79, RWY WET, WIND 320 DEGS, 29 KTS GUSTING 47 KTS, 0/-8. 50 KM, -RASN, 30 SCT, ALT 989, PIREP, MODERATE-SEVERE TURB SFC-40, RPTED AT XB55, MODERATE ICING 30-5, RPTED AT XA35, NOSIG. CLRNC WAS SID RUNEN 3M/UN872 FPR. WE PERFORMED A SUSPECTED WINDSHEAR, DELAYED ROTATION TKOF IN ACCORDANCE WITH OPERATOR AOM PROCS. ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURB BTWN 3000 FT AND 4000 FT MSL RESULTING IN EXCEEDING THE 4000 FT SID LEVELOFF ALT BY 300-400 FT. 30-40 KTS AIRSPD DEVS WERE OBSERVED DURING TURB ENCOUNTER. CAPT WAS HAND-FLYING AND RETURNED ACFT TO ASSIGNED ALT WHEN POSITIVE CTL WAS AGAIN POSSIBLE. ESTIMATE MAX DEV OF 400 FT FOR 15-20 SECONDS. THIS WAS MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH SEVERE TURB. OP OF FMC/FMS WAS ESSENTIALLY IMPOSSIBLE DURING EVENT AS WAS POSITIVE CTL OF ACFT TO ATC TOLERANCES.
