Narrative:
I am mr X's flight instructor. I have flown with him in a C172 for 2.4 hours. His total time is 43 hours. Total time in a C172 is 11.2 hours. He started training in a C152 for 4.4 hours and 27.4 hours in a PA38-112. Before I signed his 90 day endorsement I did a mock chkride and s-turns and turns at a point, and crosswind takeoff and landing. Also went over short and soft field takeoffs and lndgs. During the training, I felt confident that his flying skills were at a private pilot level. What happened was, coming into land, a wind gust blew the left wing up into the air. It pivoted counterclockwise on the right gear. The wind that day was 315 degrees at 15 KTS gusting to 20 KTS. The only damage was the airplane sunk into the grass and struck the propeller and bent the front nose gear. I was not in the airplane at the time. He had the proper signoffs to practice for his check ride. The only thing in question was it was close to night flight.
