Narrative:

Placarded item not in logbook. Leaving the aircraft in ZZZ, I stepped into the forward galley and saw a large blue inoperative sticker over the trash door of the aft trash container. I had seen no inoperative items in the logbook when we picked up the airplane in ZZZ and thought something had gone wrong with this item on our flight. I asked the flight attendants what was wrong with it and they all said they did not know. The placard was in place when they got to the plane in ZZZ. I rechked the logbook and again found no write-ups for the trash container or any other items listed as inoperative. On inspecting the trash container, I found the plastic container or liner was not in place. I then wrote a numbered maintenance entry in the logbook stating the trash container/liner was missing and that an inoperative sticker was over the trash door. Obviously, someone upline from my crew put an inoperative sticker on the door but did not get the information into the logbook. My cabin crew does not review the logbook, so they have to assume any inoperative stickers are valid. The flight crew does not perform a preflight inspection of the cabin and nothing in the logbook indicated an inoperative item so we did not see the sticker. The container was not used so the intent of the sticker was honored despite the fact it was not logged. I have no idea how long this aircraft had been flown in this condition.

Title: MD80 CREW FOUND AN INOP PLACARD IN THE GALLEY, BUT HAD NO LISTING OF A DEFERRED ITEM IN THE ACFT LOGBOOK.

Narrative: PLACARDED ITEM NOT IN LOGBOOK. LEAVING THE ACFT IN ZZZ, I STEPPED INTO THE FORWARD GALLEY AND SAW A LARGE BLUE INOP STICKER OVER THE TRASH DOOR OF THE AFT TRASH CONTAINER. I HAD SEEN NO INOP ITEMS IN THE LOGBOOK WHEN WE PICKED UP THE AIRPLANE IN ZZZ AND THOUGHT SOMETHING HAD GONE WRONG WITH THIS ITEM ON OUR FLT. I ASKED THE FLT ATTENDANTS WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT AND THEY ALL SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW. THE PLACARD WAS IN PLACE WHEN THEY GOT TO THE PLANE IN ZZZ. I RECHKED THE LOGBOOK AND AGAIN FOUND NO WRITE-UPS FOR THE TRASH CONTAINER OR ANY OTHER ITEMS LISTED AS INOP. ON INSPECTING THE TRASH CONTAINER, I FOUND THE PLASTIC CONTAINER OR LINER WAS NOT IN PLACE. I THEN WROTE A NUMBERED MAINT ENTRY IN THE LOGBOOK STATING THE TRASH CONTAINER/LINER WAS MISSING AND THAT AN INOP STICKER WAS OVER THE TRASH DOOR. OBVIOUSLY, SOMEONE UPLINE FROM MY CREW PUT AN INOP STICKER ON THE DOOR BUT DID NOT GET THE INFO INTO THE LOGBOOK. MY CABIN CREW DOES NOT REVIEW THE LOGBOOK, SO THEY HAVE TO ASSUME ANY INOP STICKERS ARE VALID. THE FLC DOES NOT PERFORM A PREFLT INSPECTION OF THE CABIN AND NOTHING IN THE LOGBOOK INDICATED AN INOP ITEM SO WE DID NOT SEE THE STICKER. THE CONTAINER WAS NOT USED SO THE INTENT OF THE STICKER WAS HONORED DESPITE THE FACT IT WAS NOT LOGGED. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG THIS ACFT HAD BEEN FLOWN IN THIS CONDITION.
