Narrative:
While descending on the mizar 3 arrival into dtw to assigned altitude of 12000 ft, my copilot pointed out that I was going below 12000 ft. I started my recovery immediately at 11700 ft, but did not want to cause undue stress on my passenger, so I recovered as smoothly as possible. My altitude touched 11500 ft at the bottom and then came right back up. As I climbed through 11800 ft, dtw approach asked me my altitude. By the time I responded, I was passing 11900 ft and said '11900 ft, climbing to 12000 ft.' in the future, I will be more diligent in my situational awareness. In addition, I will take more aggressive corrective action and take the risk of having to apologize to my passenger for the discomfort rather than allow the aircraft to be placed in harm's way.
