Narrative:
After flying over tampa, fl, east/west runway, I was held to 2100 ft until abeam st petersburg, runway 17L. At that time, I was xferred to st petersburg tower and cleared to land on runway 17L. I was high and fast, too fast to put the gear down. I raised the air spoiler to slow down and descend. When I reached pattern altitude, I was focused on making a perfect approach and landing. It was a perfect approach and would have been a perfect landing, but I put the gear down. Little damage was done to the plane and no one was injured. There was a friend and I on board. The damage was to the flaps, step and propeller and an antenna on the bottom that popped up. A tow truck raised the plane and the gear was dropped down and a tug moved the plane to my hangar. In reconstructing the mishap, I find 2 mistakes: 1) I should have slowed down, dropped the gear, and began the descent. 2) I should not have focused as hard on making a perfect landing, but on making a proper landing.
