Narrative:
I was coming in on an 8 mi straight-in visual approach for runway 18, from 3500 ft MSL, doing instruction, cleared to proceed on final #4 for the airport behind the 360 degree turning traffic for runway 18. I idented the mooney as #3, and #2 ahead of it. As I continued on the approach, I was about to call for my clearance to land on runway 18, and a small cessna passed from underneath me, in front of my aircraft's nose. It was about 200 ft below and just ahead of me, so I performed a go around to the right and entered the pattern and landed the airplane. The tower wasn't able to determine the distance as well as me, but did notice the need to go around. Ues (waukesha county airport, wi). Dec/xa/01. Ues is the third busiest airport in the state of wisconsin, and it doesn't have radar. This isn't the first time this has happened to any of us who fly at ues on a daily basis.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 PLT TRAINEE MADE A GAR AT THE DIRECTION OF THE RPTING INSTRUCTOR DURING A VISUAL APCH DUE TO ANOTHER CESSNA PASSING 200 FT BELOW HIM FOR THE SAME RWY. THE CTLR HAD NOT NOTICED THE CONFLICT SINCE THE TWR IS NOT RADAR EQUIPPED.
Narrative: I WAS COMING IN ON AN 8 MI STRAIGHT-IN VISUAL APCH FOR RWY 18, FROM 3500 FT MSL, DOING INSTRUCTION, CLRED TO PROCEED ON FINAL #4 FOR THE ARPT BEHIND THE 360 DEG TURNING TFC FOR RWY 18. I IDENTED THE MOONEY AS #3, AND #2 AHEAD OF IT. AS I CONTINUED ON THE APCH, I WAS ABOUT TO CALL FOR MY CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 18, AND A SMALL CESSNA PASSED FROM UNDERNEATH ME, IN FRONT OF MY ACFT'S NOSE. IT WAS ABOUT 200 FT BELOW AND JUST AHEAD OF ME, SO I PERFORMED A GAR TO THE R AND ENTERED THE PATTERN AND LANDED THE AIRPLANE. THE TWR WASN'T ABLE TO DETERMINE THE DISTANCE AS WELL AS ME, BUT DID NOTICE THE NEED TO GO AROUND. UES (WAUKESHA COUNTY ARPT, WI). DEC/XA/01. UES IS THE THIRD BUSIEST ARPT IN THE STATE OF WISCONSIN, AND IT DOESN'T HAVE RADAR. THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ANY OF US WHO FLY AT UES ON A DAILY BASIS.
