Narrative:

As we exited the runway on the high speed taxiway Y5, we were told by tower to call ground. We did not stop on the high speed and continued onto the active taxiway Y. Ground frequency was busy, so we kept rolling slowly toward taxiway a. The ground controller seemed agitated and told us 'don't ever move on my txwys without talking to me first.' I believe there is a lot of confusion as to what exactly we are supposed to do as different airports have different exiting procedures from active runways. In a lot of the airports we go to, if you stop on a high speed turnoff you will get yelled at because you are blocking runway exits. I think this controller was a little too vocal in informing us of iad procedures.

Title: A D328 CREW, AFTER LNDG AT IAD, CONTINUED FROM THE HIGH SPD ONTO THE PARALLEL TXWY WITHOUT CLRNC FROM GND CTL.

Narrative: AS WE EXITED THE RWY ON THE HIGH SPD TXWY Y5, WE WERE TOLD BY TWR TO CALL GND. WE DID NOT STOP ON THE HIGH SPD AND CONTINUED ONTO THE ACTIVE TXWY Y. GND FREQ WAS BUSY, SO WE KEPT ROLLING SLOWLY TOWARD TXWY A. THE GND CTLR SEEMED AGITATED AND TOLD US 'DON'T EVER MOVE ON MY TXWYS WITHOUT TALKING TO ME FIRST.' I BELIEVE THERE IS A LOT OF CONFUSION AS TO WHAT EXACTLY WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO AS DIFFERENT ARPTS HAVE DIFFERENT EXITING PROCS FROM ACTIVE RWYS. IN A LOT OF THE ARPTS WE GO TO, IF YOU STOP ON A HIGH SPD TURNOFF YOU WILL GET YELLED AT BECAUSE YOU ARE BLOCKING RWY EXITS. I THINK THIS CTLR WAS A LITTLE TOO VOCAL IN INFORMING US OF IAD PROCS.
