Narrative:
While taxiing from ramp near gate xx to takeoff on runway 17L, the clearance was to taxi to runway 17L and hold short of the approach area. The visibility was approximately 1/2 mi. The sign for the approach area is the third sign obscured by 2 other taxiway signs far to the left of the intersection of 3 txwys. The taxiway was wet obscuring the hold line. In trying to navigation the intersection of the 3 txwys, we missed the hold short line for the approach area and the sign indicating it and taxied to the runway hold short line. The signage needs to be farther apart so as not to obscure one sign with another. Hold short taxiway lights need to be installed at the approach area hold line. Supplemental information from acn 532765: instructions to 'hold short of runway approach area' were misinterped to mean 'hold short of runway.'

Title: A B727 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT SDF, TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR THE APCH AREA.
