Narrative:
During pushback/engine start, the left, number 1, engine had a hot start. The engine was shut down at 568 degree C but reached 574 degree C for 1 second. N3 was 43 percent and fuel flow was 700 pounds per hour. All other indications were normal with APU psi at 32. After the engine was shut down we got out the MEL and manuals and read about aborting engine starts. The manual indicated that the interrupted start needed to be written up in the logbook but no specifics were given if maintenance needed to check the engine prior to another start attempt. We called maintenance before starting and were informed by them to go ahead and attempt another start. The second start was uneventful with no abnormalities and well within egt limitations. During taxi out we decided to check with maintenance again to ensure we were ok to go. Once again we were advised that everything was okay and well within their parameters. During cruise we had a radio patch to maintenance and they informed us it probably should have been checked prior to a second start attempt. We informed them we would write it up at destination.
