Narrative:

Runway environment violation. Taxied onto runway 23L without clearance. Called tower for takeoff clearance after taxiing onto runway 23L. On climb out radio communication with departure concerning violation caused 400 ft altitude bust (distraction). Contributing factors: ramp has direct access to runway without crossing any taxiway. Stopped at edge of ramp/taxiway/runway for run-up and ground control clearance. After cleared to runway 23L by ground taxied directly onto active runway. Realized immediately that runway violated. Ramp to taxiway markings not clear. Should not allow access to taxiway/runway without improved markings. Possibly not allowing access to taxiway/runway from this ramp access point. No traffic conflicts occurred.

STOPPED AT EDGE OF RAMP/TXWY/RWY FOR RUN-UP AND GND CTL CLRNC. AFTER CLRED TO RWY 23L BY GND TAXIED DIRECTLY ONTO ACTIVE RWY. REALIZED IMMEDIATELY THAT RWY VIOLATED. RAMP TO TXWY MARKINGS NOT CLR. SHOULD NOT ALLOW ACCESS TO TXWY/RWY WITHOUT IMPROVED MARKINGS. POSSIBLY NOT ALLOWING ACCESS TO TXWY/RWY FROM THIS RAMP ACCESS POINT. NO TFC CONFLICTS OCCURRED.
