Narrative:

All operation is normal and according to the air carrier SOP's. We are currently on vectors (+/-330 degrees and 500 ft) from detroit approach control for the ILS runway 21L. The problem occurred when the controller assigned us the last vector (+/-260 degrees) to intercept the localizer runway 21L. I started turning wbound (left) toward 260 degrees when the captain (PNF) told me 'right turn to 260 degrees' (long way around). Maybe I hadn't heard the controller properly, but this seemed odd. Nevertheless, I complied and reversed the turn. In that process, the controller immediately asked us what we were doing and gave us a corrective action to which I complied promptly. The rest of the flight ended normally. The controller did not mention any major conflict. We both had a short night with a very early departure. The captain and I are both experienced in the aircraft.

Title: A DC9 CREW, ON APCH TO DTW, TURNED THE WRONG WAY FOR THE ILS INTERCEPT, CAUSING AN INQUIRY FROM ATC.

Narrative: ALL OP IS NORMAL AND ACCORDING TO THE ACR SOP'S. WE ARE CURRENTLY ON VECTORS (+/-330 DEGS AND 500 FT) FROM DETROIT APCH CTL FOR THE ILS RWY 21L. THE PROB OCCURRED WHEN THE CTLR ASSIGNED US THE LAST VECTOR (+/-260 DEGS) TO INTERCEPT THE LOC RWY 21L. I STARTED TURNING WBOUND (L) TOWARD 260 DEGS WHEN THE CAPT (PNF) TOLD ME 'R TURN TO 260 DEGS' (LONG WAY AROUND). MAYBE I HADN'T HEARD THE CTLR PROPERLY, BUT THIS SEEMED ODD. NEVERTHELESS, I COMPLIED AND REVERSED THE TURN. IN THAT PROCESS, THE CTLR IMMEDIATELY ASKED US WHAT WE WERE DOING AND GAVE US A CORRECTIVE ACTION TO WHICH I COMPLIED PROMPTLY. THE REST OF THE FLT ENDED NORMALLY. THE CTLR DID NOT MENTION ANY MAJOR CONFLICT. WE BOTH HAD A SHORT NIGHT WITH A VERY EARLY DEP. THE CAPT AND I ARE BOTH EXPERIENCED IN THE ACFT.
