Narrative:
On byp.4 STAR, first officer was flying arrival while I was working radios and reviewing approach charts, etc. Apparently, first officer failed to slow according to STAR (210 KIAS at stonz intersection). ATC inquired as to whether or not we had slowed. Upon closer review of the chart, the 210 KIAS speed reduction is listed in a separate box from the turn/course change box, as there are 2 boxes of instructions for the same intersection. Thus, when one reads the instruction box for this particular intersection, it is easy to overlook the other box for the speed. This arrival (like so many) has more fine print than necessary -- with many different speeds/courses/altitudes for different fixes and aircraft types. I should have noticed the speed box and corrected the first officer, but the workload and other flight related duties caused us to overlook the speed reduction somewhat. It might help to include speeds on the courses -- more than once.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 FLC FAILS TO REDUCE THEIR SPD FOR XING STONZ INTXN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BYP BYP4 STAR FOR DFW, TX.
Narrative: ON BYP.4 STAR, FO WAS FLYING ARR WHILE I WAS WORKING RADIOS AND REVIEWING APCH CHARTS, ETC. APPARENTLY, FO FAILED TO SLOW ACCORDING TO STAR (210 KIAS AT STONZ INTXN). ATC INQUIRED AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE HAD SLOWED. UPON CLOSER REVIEW OF THE CHART, THE 210 KIAS SPD REDUCTION IS LISTED IN A SEPARATE BOX FROM THE TURN/COURSE CHANGE BOX, AS THERE ARE 2 BOXES OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SAME INTXN. THUS, WHEN ONE READS THE INSTRUCTION BOX FOR THIS PARTICULAR INTXN, IT IS EASY TO OVERLOOK THE OTHER BOX FOR THE SPD. THIS ARR (LIKE SO MANY) HAS MORE FINE PRINT THAN NECESSARY -- WITH MANY DIFFERENT SPDS/COURSES/ALTS FOR DIFFERENT FIXES AND ACFT TYPES. I SHOULD HAVE NOTICED THE SPD BOX AND CORRECTED THE FO, BUT THE WORKLOAD AND OTHER FLT RELATED DUTIES CAUSED US TO OVERLOOK THE SPD REDUCTION SOMEWHAT. IT MIGHT HELP TO INCLUDE SPDS ON THE COURSES -- MORE THAN ONCE.
