Narrative:
On approach into den, we were 'cleared for the visual runway 16, maintain 170 KTS to the marker, you are following a B757.' as we turned final, about 2 mi outside the marker, it appeared we were closing on the B757, so we started slowing the aircraft gear, landing checklist etc. Hence we were busy when ATC questioned our speed. The captain told them we were slowing for wake when ATC informed us that we had to maintain 170 KTS and that the distance was 5 mi. As asked, we contacted tower and the captain asked tower our distance from the B757, to which the tower replied 4 mi. Knowing that when cleared for the visual we have accepted responses for wake, etc, we were busy flying the aircraft. This hindered us momentarily to communication with ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 FLC SLOWED ACFT TO ASSURE ADEQUATE DISTANCE BTWN THEM AND A B757 DIRECTED BY ATC TO FOLLOW ON THE APCH. HOWEVER, THEY HAD BEEN INSTRUCTED TO MAINTAIN A HIGHER SPD THAN THAT WHICH THEY WERE NOW SLOWED CAUSING ATC TO ALERT THEM TO THAT FACT.
Narrative: ON APCH INTO DEN, WE WERE 'CLRED FOR THE VISUAL RWY 16, MAINTAIN 170 KTS TO THE MARKER, YOU ARE FOLLOWING A B757.' AS WE TURNED FINAL, ABOUT 2 MI OUTSIDE THE MARKER, IT APPEARED WE WERE CLOSING ON THE B757, SO WE STARTED SLOWING THE ACFT GEAR, LNDG CHKLIST ETC. HENCE WE WERE BUSY WHEN ATC QUESTIONED OUR SPD. THE CAPT TOLD THEM WE WERE SLOWING FOR WAKE WHEN ATC INFORMED US THAT WE HAD TO MAINTAIN 170 KTS AND THAT THE DISTANCE WAS 5 MI. AS ASKED, WE CONTACTED TWR AND THE CAPT ASKED TWR OUR DISTANCE FROM THE B757, TO WHICH THE TWR REPLIED 4 MI. KNOWING THAT WHEN CLRED FOR THE VISUAL WE HAVE ACCEPTED RESPONSES FOR WAKE, ETC, WE WERE BUSY FLYING THE ACFT. THIS HINDERED US MOMENTARILY TO COM WITH ATC.
