Narrative:
With parallel runways in operation at hayward, ca (hwd), and while awaiting IFR release, I was told by ATC to 'taxi across runway 10L, hold short runway 10R, awaiting IFR release.' I taxied across runway 10L and into position on runway 10R. ATC (hwd tower) saw me in position on runway 10R, told me my instructions were to hold short runway 10R, and asked me to taxi clear of runway. High pilot workload -- single pilot, complex aircraft, preparing for IFR departure in complex airspace (underlying sfo class B and oak class C). Runway/taxiway environment -- very small hold short area between runways is easily missed. Airport environment -- busy time of day at busy training airport, therefore busy frequency with a sense of urgency to expedite ground operations on/off runways. My high workload caused me to miss a critical instruction from ATC. Better markings, especially hold short flashing lights might have prevented me from taxiing onto an active runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C421 PLT, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT HWD, TAXIED INTO POS WHEN HE WAS CLRED TO HOLD SHORT.
Narrative: WITH PARALLEL RWYS IN OP AT HAYWARD, CA (HWD), AND WHILE AWAITING IFR RELEASE, I WAS TOLD BY ATC TO 'TAXI ACROSS RWY 10L, HOLD SHORT RWY 10R, AWAITING IFR RELEASE.' I TAXIED ACROSS RWY 10L AND INTO POS ON RWY 10R. ATC (HWD TWR) SAW ME IN POS ON RWY 10R, TOLD ME MY INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO HOLD SHORT RWY 10R, AND ASKED ME TO TAXI CLR OF RWY. HIGH PLT WORKLOAD -- SINGLE PLT, COMPLEX ACFT, PREPARING FOR IFR DEP IN COMPLEX AIRSPACE (UNDERLYING SFO CLASS B AND OAK CLASS C). RWY/TXWY ENVIRONMENT -- VERY SMALL HOLD SHORT AREA BTWN RWYS IS EASILY MISSED. ARPT ENVIRONMENT -- BUSY TIME OF DAY AT BUSY TRAINING ARPT, THEREFORE BUSY FREQ WITH A SENSE OF URGENCY TO EXPEDITE GND OPS ON/OFF RWYS. MY HIGH WORKLOAD CAUSED ME TO MISS A CRITICAL INSTRUCTION FROM ATC. BETTER MARKINGS, ESPECIALLY HOLD SHORT FLASHING LIGHTS MIGHT HAVE PREVENTED ME FROM TAXIING ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY.
