Narrative:

Volume 3 (A320 aircraft operating manual) which includes limitations, procedures (normal, non-normal), emergency procedures, etc, found to be out of date and all pages in disarray. It appears that the contents had been dumped out, then stuffed back into binder. Pages missing, upside down, torn, old out-of-date pages still in book, etc. Manual totally worthless in this condition. Preflight only involves insuring manuals on board. The only way we discovered the problem was that we needed to reference some material en route. After about 20 mins, we found what we were looking for. Thankfully, it was not real urgent or an emergency where we really needed the material. Dispatch and maintenance control were available by radio if we needed help, however, the required material was not available on board.
