Narrative:
Volume 3 (A320 aircraft operating manual) which includes limitations, procedures (normal, non-normal), emergency procedures, etc, found to be out of date and all pages in disarray. It appears that the contents had been dumped out, then stuffed back into binder. Pages missing, upside down, torn, old out-of-date pages still in book, etc. Manual totally worthless in this condition. Preflight only involves insuring manuals on board. The only way we discovered the problem was that we needed to reference some material en route. After about 20 mins, we found what we were looking for. Thankfully, it was not real urgent or an emergency where we really needed the material. Dispatch and maintenance control were available by radio if we needed help, however, the required material was not available on board.

Title: A319 FLC'S NEED TO REF ACFT OPERATING MANUAL ENRTE. FOUND MANUAL OUT OF CURRENCY AND MISSING CRITICAL PAGES.
Narrative: VOLUME 3 (A320 ACFT OPERATING MANUAL) WHICH INCLUDES LIMITATIONS, PROCS (NORMAL, NON-NORMAL), EMER PROCS, ETC, FOUND TO BE OUT OF DATE AND ALL PAGES IN DISARRAY. PREFLT ONLY INVOLVES INSURING MANUALS ON BOARD. THE ONLY WAY WE DISCOVERED THE PROB WAS THAT WE NEEDED TO REF SOME MATERIAL ENRTE. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINS, WE FOUND WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR. THANKFULLY, IT WAS NOT REAL URGENT OR AN EMER WHERE WE REALLY NEEDED THE MATERIAL. DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL WERE AVAILABLE BY RADIO IF WE NEEDED HELP, HOWEVER, THE REQUIRED MATERIAL WAS NOT AVAILABLE ON BOARD.
