Narrative:
Because of the language barrier, we understood we were to fly the cabos 1 out of mmsd when in reality we were supposed to fly the katrol 1. Upon realizing the misunderstanding, the controller cleared us via another airway to lapaz. From now on, in a foreign country, both pilots will be listening when the clearance is picked up. Also, it would be helpful if mmsd named different numbers after their departures. They have 5 departures off of 16 each with the #1 after it, ie, cabos 1, katrol 1, ###1. If each had a different number, chances are the pilot would catch the number, even if the names were similar in a language he didn't speak.
