Narrative:
During taxi for takeoff, cargo smoke and cargo fire lights illuminated. Appropriate abnormal/emergency checklist procedures were completed. False fire warning was the result of too many live birds (quail) loaded in cargo compartment. I would suggest a review in this procedure would be appropriate.

Title: AN MD80 FLT HAS TO RETURN TO THE RAMP AFTER THE ACFT'S CARGO WARNING SYS EMITS SMOKE AND OVERHEAT CONDITION WARNING TO THE CREW AT IAH, TX.
Narrative: DURING TAXI FOR TKOF, CARGO SMOKE AND CARGO FIRE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. APPROPRIATE ABNORMAL/EMER CHKLIST PROCS WERE COMPLETED. FALSE FIRE WARNING WAS THE RESULT OF TOO MANY LIVE BIRDS (QUAIL) LOADED IN CARGO COMPARTMENT. I WOULD SUGGEST A REVIEW IN THIS PROC WOULD BE APPROPRIATE.
